WOLLEMI NATIONAL PARK

WOLLEMI NATIONAL PARK

Wollemi National Park – The largest wilderness area in NSW

Dunns Swamp – NSW National Parks & Wildlife – Destination NSW

The Wollemi National Park is the largest wilderness area in NSW and is part of the Greater Blue Mountains World Heritage Area.

The Wollemi National Park covers 501,703-hectares, and contains the 361,113-hectare Wollemi Wilderness – the largest such wilderness area in Australia.
The park is a dramatic setting for scenic walks, swimming, canoeing and camping and it’s just a couple of hours drive north-west of Sydney.
It has a maze of canyons, cliffs and undisturbed forest and the landscape ranges from exposed rocky tops to deep protected valleys.
The flora varies in response to this endless variety of habitat with extensive tall open woodlands, heath and lush patches of rainforest.

Wollemi Pine – Wikipedia

The Wollemi Valley has been home to the Wollemi Pine and hidden from man for millions of years.
In 1994, deep in a remote gorge of Wollemi National Park, bushwalker David Noble and three friends stumbled upon the ‘dinosaur tree’ that became the Wollemi Pine – a survivor from a distant time before flowering plants came to rule the Earth.
It turned out to be a whole new genus of a Southern Hemisphere conifer family that includes Chilean monkey puzzle tree and Australia’s Norfolk Island pine. And it amazed botanists around the world. MORE INFO

In the southeast of the park, pack a picnic and hike down to the beautiful Colo River for lunch to view one of the state’s most picturesque gorges.

Set up camp by the Wolgan River and head out to explore the historic ruins at Newnes, once the site of an oil shale mining facility, or take the kids to marvel at the Glow Worm Tunnel, part of the old railway that once serviced the area. Bushwalkers and rock climbers will thrill at the hikes and climbing opportunities available in this striking, escarpment-bound valley.

In the northwest of the park, Ganguddy (Dunns Swamp) offers a tranquil escape dotted with remarkable pagoda rock formations and plenty of opportunities for easy walks, swimming and canoeing.

Access to the park can be made from Newnes in the Wolgan Valley, the Glow Worm Tunnels on the Newnes Plateau and Glen Davis in the Capertee Valley.  MORE INFORMATION
