The Kosciuszko National Park covers over 6,000 square kilometres of snow-capped peaks, alpine meadows, limestone gorges, snow gum forests, and is the headwaters of the Snowy River.

In the park are Mount Kosciuszko, the highest mountain in Australia at 2,228 meters, and Cabramurra the highest town in Australia.

The Park is north of the Alpine National Park in Victoria and south of the Namadgi National Park in the ACT. The towns of Cooma, Tumut, and Jindabyne are on the edge of the park and provide services to the Park.

Kosciuszko National Park abounds with snow sports walking trails and mountain biking tracks. There are caves to explore and you could climb Australia’s highest mountain, then stay in heritage accommodation or camp in the wild.

The highest ski and snowboard runs in Australia are at Thredbo and Perisher. There are exciting cross-country skiing trails too. If you like bushwalking then you should try the popular Thredbo Valley track or for a real challenge take the Main Range challenge.

Horse riding across the High Plains and near Khancoban is very popular and carries on in the tradition of Banjo Paterson’s “Man from the Snowy River”

The Park has historic huts, dazzling wildflowers in springtime, and some of the most stunning lookouts in Australia.

The waterways and lakes in the Park provide great fishing and water sports. You can explore the lower Snowy and upper Murray rivers and throw a line in a mountain stream or in a reservoir such as Blowering, Eucumbene, and Tantangara.

The mountain drives are spectacular. The Alpine Way and Snowy Mountains Highway are worth taking and will give you a wonderful overview of the region. If you would like someone else to do the driving then ask about guided tours at any of the visitor centres.

1. HIGH PLAINS AREA

The place for summer walks, horse riding, and trail biking on the way to mountain huts, caves, and gorges. You can camp or stay in Currango’s heritage cottages in this wild north-east section of the park.

2. KHANCOBAN AREA

On the western side of the Park, the Khancoban is the place to discover Geehi and Tom Groggin’s camp spots, go fishing and horse riding, hike the Jagungal Wildernesstake and take in the views at Western Fall.

3. LOWER SNOWY RIVER AREA

This is the wild south of the Park where you can camp by the Snowy River, and walk, bike or horse ride scenic trails.

Entrance to the northern area of the Park with water sports and wonderful wildlife at Blowering Reservoir where you can camp and explore then hidden walks and waterfalls in the foothills of the Snowy Mountains.
