MOLONG VISITOR GUIDE

Molong is a delightful historic village 20 minutes north of Orange on the Mitchell Highway towards Wellington.
The area is a rich farming country producing wheat, sheep, cattle, fruit, and wine.

Many of Molong’s buildings are classified by the National Trust with some dating from the early 1800s and most are well cared for and restored. We love the row of old shops west of the Yarn Market.
Molong is a popular stopping point for travelers to enjoy a coffee, visit the museum and art gallery, explore the Yarn Market craft cottage and while there, buy some of their local homemade produce.

MOLONG ROCKS Well, not really except at the pub on Friday night. “Molong” means many rocks or a place of many rocks and the name is derived from the Aboriginal word meaning “place of many rocks”

History
Molong started out as a police and military outpost and was visited by explorer Charles Sturt in 1828. Sir Thomas Mitchell on his 1864 expedition employed and aboriginal tracker, Yuranigh and they became close friends. His grave is on the Orange side of town and is a rare example of a combined aboriginal and european grave site.
The first copper mine in Australia, Copper Hill, (how original), was just north of the village.
In 1896 Mr Charles Packham first cultivated the now very popular Packham Pear.
